Workshop · Assessing opportunities and risks in international research collaborations

ChinaHub Networking Event 2025 · Munich, Germany, 20 November 2025

As part of the ChinaHub networking event 2025 we presented our whole-of-system approach to safeguarding science, which treats research security as a cross-cutting task involving different departments and roles across universities. A central part of the event’s programme was the introduction of our tool for weighing up the opportunities and risks of international research collaborations (OPERATE). Participants applied the tool to a case study and shared their reflections in workshop groups.

Training · Securing international research collaborations

Centre for Science Management · 7 November 2025

On behalf of the Centre for Science Management e.V. (ZWM) in Speyer and the German University Association (DHV), we conducted an online workshop on research security in international collaborations. The two-part format combined our self-paced e-learning module and a full-day live practice workshop. Working with participants on case studies, we identified key security-relevant processes, actor constellations, and implementation approaches.

Workshop · Successfully implementing research security measures

Annual Conference of the Science Management Network · Halle (Saale), Germany, 6 and 7 November 2025

As part of the Annual Conference of the Science Management Network (“Netzwerk Wissenschaftsmanagement”), we hosted an interactive workshop on implementing research security measures at universities and research organisations. The session centered on sharing experiences around current challenges and initial steps for embedding research security at the institutional level. Together with science managers, we mapped relevant processes and defined starting points for implementation.

Workshop · Research security as an institutional cross-cutting task

German Electron Synchrotron (DESY) · Hamburg, Germany, 3 and 4 September 2025

During a two-day workshop with the German Electron Synchrotron, we brought together representatives from Helmholtz Centres to discuss a systemic approach to implementing research security as a cross-cutting institutional task. In cross-disciplinary and cross-functional working groups, participants explored key connections between administrative processes and scientific practice using case studies. This was complemented by direct exchanges with researchers on the challenges they face in international collaborations. A central focus was on fostering a “whole-of-system” understanding of research security and improving coordination of measures and responsibilities.

Workshop · Strengthening research security in international collaboration

Rostock, Germany · 25 February 2025

At the invitation of the University of Rostock and the Ministry of Science of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, we advised researchers from across the state on research security. The discussion focused on how structures and processes should be designed to enable successful and secure international collaborations. The aim was to develop practical approaches for assessing research topics, potential partners, and framework conditions.
